Charity of the week
For people who live in isolated villages in developing nations, a trip to the nearest health clinic can be an hours-long journey. The need for more accessible health care inspired pediatric physician Dr. Charles Dietzen to found Timmy Global Health (timmyglobalhealth.org), an Indianapolis-based organization that brings doctors and medical professionals directly to those in need in rural areas around the globe. Timmy Global Health’s volunteers trek to remote areas in Ecuador, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Nigeria with medical supplies, and set up short-term clinics where they offer checkups and treatment for chronic conditions. Since 1997, the organization has treated more than 84,000 patients.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
