Charity of the week
For 40 years, The Center for Investigative Reporting (revealnews.org) has produced award-winning journalism that has held governments and corporations accountable while exposing human rights violations, wasteful government spending, and threats to public safety. The nation’s first nonprofit investigative journalism organization, CIR works closely with a wide range of media partners, such as PBS’s Frontline, to carry out intrepid reporting and produce innovative multimedia work, including Reveal, the first-ever public radio series devoted to investigative reporting. CIR’s work has included investigations that exposed how the government worked with data-mining companies to spy on Americans after the Sept. 11 attacks, and how California farmers use dangerous fumigants to deliver strawberries at an affordable price year-round.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
