Tip of the week
How to buy a car like the pros
Test-drive multiple models. After researching the vehicles you’re considering, stop in at dealerships for test drives and let the salespeople know you’re testing, not yet buying. Take notes on each model’s pros and cons, and then trim your list down to a single choice.
Negotiate by email. Email nearby dealers, telling each one you’re ready to buy and are simply shopping for the best price. Specify the model, color, trim level, and features you want—and say no if they ask you to drop in. You might get thousands off the sticker price without haggling.
Secure your own loan. If you’re financing the purchase, arrange a loan in advance with a bank or credit union instead of letting the dealer set the interest rate and terms. “Once you’ve agreed on a price, have the bank or credit union make out a check, then simply go to the dealership and drive off.”
