Charity of the week
Founded in 1976, Facing History and Ourselves (facinghistory.org) is an international organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to help them become humane leaders and informed citizens. By studying the historical development and the lessons of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives. Students who have gone through the program have noticed more respect in their classrooms and less tolerance for bullying. Facing History has so far impacted nearly 6 million students and has partnerships with schools around North America and in South Africa, France, Northern Ireland, and China, among other countries.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
