Charity of the week
Founded in 1983, Angel Flight West (angelflight west.org) provides free travel for people with financial or transportation constraints who need to fly to hospitals or face other compelling needs. AFW enlists a network of more than 1,400 volunteer pilots to fly private planes and transport patients to their desired destination. The charity offers services to people with a range of needs, including patients who require surgery at an out-of-town hospital, domestic violence survivors looking to relocate, family members who want to visit someone with a dire health issue, and residents who desire to be relocated after a natural disaster. AFW serves those living in 13 states in the West, including Alaska and Hawaii, and has provided 75,000 flights since its inception.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
